Tottenham Hotspur are said to have rekindled their interest in Real Madrid’s star midfielder Isco. Spurs tried to strike a loan deal in the summer when Isco spoke out about his frustration concerning less game time at the Real Madrid but the deal failed to materialise.
Since then, Isco has been seen as a regular in Zidane’s first eleven, who opted to leave James Rodriguez on the bench for him, until now. With the combination of Luka Modric and Kovacic working well now, he is unlikely to get more chances. The 24-year-old Spaniard, who joined from Malaga in 2013, has never fully established himself at the Bernabeu.
Midfield has been a crisis area for Tottenham this season. Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t have a fixed attacking unit as he continuously shuffles positions of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Dembele and Son from game to game.
And although the players have put in more than decent displays under his setup, the Argentine desperately needs more options to get an extra edge, which goes missing in Tottenham’s away games. Another cause of worry has been the rise to stardom of their academy product Alli, who has garnered a lot of attention from numerous European giants and a move is said to be on the cards with Real Madrid interested.
Isco would be a great fit whether alongside him or in place of him, given his versatility in the attacking third. However, landing him won’t be an easy task for Pochettino. Reportedly, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal have been put on high alert after it was revealed that Isco wants to leave Real Madrid.
After starting just 11 of Madrid’s 21 La Liga games so far this season, Isco has decided to move on, Spanish news outlets have claimed.
The lack of playing time has affected his chances of getting into the national team as well and Isco desperately wants a way out. Apart from the Premier League clubs, Italian side Juventus and Real’s arch rival Barcelona are also interested in the player.
While Isco would make an ideal candidate for Spurs’ counter attack, his physical attributes could be a big disadvantage in the English Premier League. The position of a natural attacking midfielder has been limited to Eriksen and 19-year-old Onomah for Pochettino. The likes of Alli, Dembele and Dembele are more box-to-box midfielders. Hence, a move for attacking midfielder next transfer window is imminent for Tottenham, and who better than Isco?
