Leeds United manager Garry Monk says he is currently very focused at Leeds. The manager had been heavily linked with Rangers in the last few days after Rangers announced recently that manager Mark Warburton has resigned from the post of the Gers manager. The Scottish club have been looking for a new manager and have reportedly identified Monk as one of the candidates.
Monk was appointed the manager of the Championship club at the beginning of this season and the Whites have been excellent since his appointment. They are currently are in fifth place in the Championship and are definitely one of the top favourites to finish in the top six to earn a playoff berth. If they do get the promotion, they will be breaking a 14 years hiatus of not playing in the Premier League.
Rangers board have started to find the successor of Warburton and have reportedly shortlisted a couple of names. The likes of Billy Davies, Derek McInnes and Tommy Wright alongside Gary Rowett are the potential candidates to get the job at Elland Road.
However, Monk has rubbished all the rumours saying, “I don’t comment on speculation.
“I’m focused on my job here.”
The Whites are having their best season since 2006 when they reached the Playoff final but lost to Watford. Leeds got back to winning ways in the last match as they defeated Bristol City 2-1 after two consecutive losses. Monk is now the longest serving manager under Massimo Cellino’s ownership.
Monk’s excellent work has not gone unnoticed and Rangers could make an attempt to hijack the 37-year-old. Should he leave Leeds United, it would be a big blow to the club given they are targeting a promotion to the Premier League by the end of this season.
But a move to Scotland might be a backward step for Monk who is right now on a roller coaster ride and could lead the Whites to all the way to the Premier League. After all let’s get it straight, why would you want to leave a club like Leeds United (with such a great history) when they are on the brink of playing in the Premier League after a hiatus of almost 14 years for a club who would at least for the short term play second fiddle to Celtic.
Yes Rangers is a historic club (before you lot get your panties tied up in a knot) but no one reasonable can expect Monk to leave Leeds United for Rangers. It’s just stupid.
