Virgil van Dijk will reportedly reject any offer to leave Southampton. The Dutch defender has been heavily linked with Liverpool.
He arrived from Celtic in the summer of 2015 and has been outstanding for the Saints. Southampton are very keen to keep him at the club and he has been handed the captaincy this term.
Jose Fonte left the club for West Ham in January and any further departure would be a severe blow to them. His impressive performances have attracted interest from Manchester City as well but Pep Guardiola failed to bring the player to Etihad. The defender is currently nursing an ankle injury and could be out for the season.
Ajax legend Frank De Boer heaped praise on the player, “He has made a transition in a positive way.
“Under Ronald Koeman at Southampton, he made unbelievable progress and now this year he is one of the top defenders in the Premier League.
“When he was at Groningen he did OK, he was physical, but we Dutch men always want defenders to play the ball to the same colour and that is something we thought was not his best thing. But now he does that.
“His passing is excellent but, most importantly, his defending is outstanding. He is showing it week in, week out in one of the toughest leagues in the world.”
