Former Liverpool player John Aldridge thinks that Georginio Wijnaldum is far better than Emre Can.
Can has been below par for the Reds this season. Wijnaldum has been preferred over Can in the Liverpool midfield alongside Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana. He has made 23 appearances for them this season.
Can was expected to emerge as a key player under Jürgen Klopp but hasn’t played to the fullest of his ability so far this season. The German midfielder came off the bench in the last match against Tottenham Hotspur as the Reds thrashed them 2-0 to pick up their first league win in 2017.
Aldridge said, “I remember when he signed, a lot of people thought he would be the kind who goes missing in the big games, a flat-track bully.
“If anything he’s been the opposite – his better performances have come against the big boys. Against Spurs, he was fantastic.
“For me, I think this lad needs to realise just how good he is.
“There is one place up for grabs in that Liverpool midfield, and it is between Wijnaldum and Emre Can.
“It’s up to Wijnaldum to deliver this kind of performance on a regular basis, and if he does then there is no contest.”
