Jose Mourinho has revealed he cannot guarantee Wayne Rooney will stay at Manchester United. The 31-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to China.
Rooney’s form has left him on the bench as Mourinho has opted for Zlatan Ibrahimović, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial ahead of him. Former manager Louis Van Gaal tweaked his position by deploying him in the midfield but he is nowhere the same player that he used to be.
Rooney reportedly had a £52m offer from a Chinese club to ply his trade in Asia. The Chinese transfer window is open until next Tuesday and a deal might happen although the England international had said earlier that he would see out his contract which is expiring in 2018.
On being asked about Rooney’s future the Portuguese manager said, “You’ll have to ask him.
“You have to ask him.
“Of course I can’t guarantee (he will be here). I can’t guarantee that I’m here next week, how can I guarantee that a player is here next season?
“What I can guarantee is that if Wayne one day leaves the club it is not because I want him to leave the club. That’s the only thing I can guarantee.
“I would never push – or try to push – a legend of this club to another destiny.
“So you have to ask him if he sees himself staying in the club for the rest of his career or if he sees himself moving.
“It is not a question for me because I am happy to have him.”
