Tottenham succumbed to a 2-0 defeat, courtesy of Liverpool’s Senegalese winger Sadio Mane who got both the goals for the Merseyside club at Anfield. Tottenham conceded two goals in two minutes early in the first half and were unable to overturn the game against a determined Liverpool side who pressed the North Londoners high up the pitch, pressurising them into giving away possession. Below are Tottenham’s individual player ratings.
Hugo Lloris:
Rating: 8
If it hadn’t been for the Frenchman, Tottenham would have been 4 goals down. Although he made some excellent saves, his decision-making in getting off the line wasn’t up to his usual standards.
Kyle Walker:
Rating: 7.5
Kyle Walker wasn’t particularly impressive and his crosses were quite inaccurate. Milner did a really good job keeping him quiet offensively.
Eric Dier:
Rating: 6
Eric Dier as quite ponderous on the ball and made a few mistakes. He also made the error leading to Liverpool’s second goal when he wasn’t able to control his touch and lost possession to Mane.
Toby Alderweireld:
Rating: 7
Alderweireld tried his best to cover up the defensive flaws Tottenham but was unable to do so with Ben Davies unable to match Mane’s pace.
Ben Davies:
Ben Davies had a forgettable game as Sadio Mane made a mockery of him and laid bare several weaknesses of the Welshman. Davies found it hard to keep track of Mane’s runs down his left and it turned out to be the match-deciding duel.
Victor Wanyama:
Rating: 7
Wanyama too struggled in the middle of the park as he wasn’t afforded the luxury of space and time with several Liverpool players crowding him whenever he was in possession of the ball.
Moussa Dembele:
Rating: 7
Dembele too wasn’t at his usual best and struggled against the pressure of too many players surrounding him. But his ability often got him out of tough situations.
Dele Alli:
Rating: 6.5
Alli tried to be influential with whatever little possession he had but wasn’t really able to dig Tottenham out of the trouble.
Christian Eriksen:
Rating: 6.5
Eriksen too had an underwhelming game as he failed to deliver any decisive passes for the players ahead of him.
Heung-Min Son:
Rating: 7
Despite his unquestionable work-rate, his overall performance was below par as he missed two very good opportunities.
Harry Kane:
Rating: 7
Kane was often isolated up front and despite his attempts to hold the ball, he was eventually undone with Liverpool getting adequate bodies to defend.
Substitutes
Harry Winks:
Rating: 7
Winks provided some neat one touch passes but it didn’t amount to anything.
Moussa Sissoko:
Rating: 6
Sissoko was quite ineffectual after coming on.
Vincent Janssen:
Rating: N/A
Janssen played too little to warrant a rating.
