Even if one has cultivated interest for the game of football since last week or so, he is very likely to have heard of a certain Helder Costa. Liverpool locked horns with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the fourth round of the FA Cup, and the away side undoubtedly went into the game as the underdogs. However, the result was an entirely different one as the Wolves demolished Liverpool’s spirits by registering a sensational 1-2 win over the Merseyside club, thus paving their way into the fifth round.
Of course, the Reds were in freefall but more importantly, it was Costa who was the man of the hour. The winger performed with exceptional quality and brilliance, just like the way he has plied his trade throughout the season for Paul Lambert’s side. Electrifying speed, jaw-dropping passes, commendable work rate; he was a constant threat to Liverpool’s perennially shaky defence. Without any shadow of a doubt, the outing at the Anfield will be one of the best games for him personally.
Despite being on loan from Benfica, the 23-year-old has found his feet in the Championship and Fosun Group, the owners of Wolves, are all set to splash truckloads of cash on the prolific stalwart in the ongoing transfer window which is rumoured to be as high as £13 million. The transfer fee is simply humungous, but then, Costa’s intrinsic value can be weighted in gold. The club was impressed hugely by the way he set up two goals against Liverpool and should the deal materialise, Costa would be one of the highest earners in the history of Wolverhampton Wanderers. Isn’t this huge news for the Wolves’ fans?
Lambert doesn’t want to wait till the summer as his stocks are likely to rise manifold then and thus, he wants to get the Portuguese on a permanent basis in the next 48 hours.
Costa has made 25 appearances in the Championship so far this term, banging in 6 goals, collecting 5 assists and creating 34 chances which are scintillating figures for a wide man. To say the least, talent flows up and down his veins and Lambert trying to keep one of his main men with a lucrative deal makes perfect sense.
One thing is for certain, Costa’s valuation is will only have an upward trajectory and it would be a shrewd move from Wolves to retain him. If they can build a team around him, Wolves could knock on the promotion doors next season.
