After their entry back into the Premier League, Watford have not looked like relegation battlers at any point in time. Having concluded their last league campaign in the top tier of English football at the 13th spot in the league table, the beginning of 2016-17 campaign provided us hints that the Hornets could possibly challenge for a top half finish.
However, they have flattered to deceive after a bright start. At the moment, Watford are placed 14th in the league table with 23 points. Walter Mazzarri’s side have failed to register a win in their last six outings in the Premier League, with their last win dating back to 10th December 2016 when they sneaked a 3-2 win over Everton. Although flirts with the relegation zone isn’t something they are doing at the moment, they should stop being casual in their approach from here on.
Amidst the reports that have been popping up, the eye-catchy story of Watford being interested in signing Fiorentina’s Mauro Zárate catches a lot of interest. The 29-year-old forward, who is deemed as a flop in the English soil owing to his forgettable tenures at Birmingham City, Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United, is being targeted by Mazzarri who is desperate to inject some firepower into his side. But considering the infamous reputation Zárate has, will it be wise to bring him to the Vicarage Road?
Defying the critics around him, the Argentine forward has been in decent form for the Serie A outfit, scoring 4 goals and creating one in 9 appearances. However, he is frustrated after getting a mere 276 minutes of football so far this season and he himself might be tempted for a move to a place where he has some unfinished business.
Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo have only been shadows of their former self for Watford and in a situation like this, it is important that something out-of-the-box is devised. Make no mistake, Zárate is a selfish player who has a very bad temper but is still a cunning forward nonetheless who is needed to be used in the right places at the right times.
Most importantly, goals have dried up for the Yellow Army which is indeed a cause for worry going into the business end of the season. They have found the back of the net for merely two times in their last six league games which is a worrying sign indeed. However, Zárate may very well come handy if the apparent gamble of signing him by Mazzarri pays off.
