Everton have had a topsy-turvy start to life under Ronald Koeman. While they won 4 and drew 1 of their first 5 fixtures, things have been harder ever since. But they have managed to claw their way up again and sit just below Manchester United on the table.
Ronald Koeman has looked assured in his new surroundings and will be looking to strengthen his squad to build on his start. He has apparently been given the green signal by the new owner to make signings. With Bolasie’s injury ruling him out for 12 months and several areas in the squad which need repair work in itself, we might see a busy window for the Toffees, which will delight their fans.
With the transfer window heating up gradually, let us take a moment to assess the transfer likeliness of the following rumours circulating the Goodison Park, which have certainly gotten stronger after the FA Cup defeat.
MORGAN SCHNEIDERLIN – 9/10
Everton have issues in midfield. The veteran midfielder Gareth Barry is well past his prime and although he is still capable of putting in the occasional classy display, they are few and far in between now. The pace of the league and the intensity is increasing every day which sees Koeman going all out to secure a reunion with his midfield protégé in Morgan Schneiderlin.
The lanky Frenchman hardly got a look-in at United and it is reported that things are getting finalised between the two clubs who weren’t on the same page regarding the transfer fee initially.
VIRGIL VAN DIJK- 3/10
Everton are understandably looking to strengthen their defence. Jagielka is in his mid-30’s and Funes Mori hasn’t convinced properly yet. With Ashley Williams looking like the only long-term option here, Koeman needs to add players.
But their chief target, Van Dijk is reportedly on the radar of the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea and even the big guns are finding it difficult to make any progress in their pursuit. Southampton are adamant that they won’t sell and the quoted price of £50m doing the rounds is absurd for the Dutchman. Everton can’t compete with the financial might of their competitors even if the Saints’ are to sell.
MEMPHIS DEPAY- 7/10
Yannick Bolasie’s injury was a blow for Everton and obviously to the player as well. The club spent big on him and his injury almost makes it necessary to shell out the moolah to get a replacement.
And an ideal option might be lurking nearby for them. Depay has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford and is now a target for Koeman. The Dutch international will offer pace and quality on the wing and the player will be desperate to prove himself after his move to United did not quite work out.
