Southampton have been a feeder club more than anything else: shaping a bunch of really promising footballers, nurturing them and then being forced to sell them to their Premier League rivals or across the continent. Time and again, they have let youngsters blossom, and then they have had to deal with their departure from St. Mary’s. It appears that Oriol Romeo has begged to differ, well at least for the time being.
Romeu was signed in the summer of 2015 after a couple good spells at Valencia and Stuttgart. Owing to a plethora of stars in jam-packed midfield of the Blues, he never got enough opportunities at the Blues and was eventually sold to Southampton, where he has cemented his spot. Under the tutelage of Claude Puel, he has continued his fine form and has accumulated 21 appearances so far in the league this term.
He binds the team together as a unit from the middle, finding those apt passes to get the team as a pack while going forward. With 936 passes and a pass accuracy of 85%, he has also contributed in the forward areas and created 8 chances. The Spaniard sits in front of the back four and is an orthodox deep-lying playmaker more than anything else.
He is a fine player in winning tackles, intercepting and rattling the charge of the opponents when they surge forward with their attacking arsenal. His dual successes are effective and importantly, he enjoys the spirit of the game thoroughly whenever he is engineered, which is next is always in the Saints’ shirt. Puel has manoeuvred the most out of his midfielder and no wonder why they are doing quite well in the domestic competitions.
Romeu’s attributes doesn’t end here, for he is a very effective midfielder in sweeping up the game, plays the ball impeccably well from the back and holds his position well. So, could it suffice that Southampton have done a superb job by teeing up with Romeu with a long-term deal?
Absolutely. Southampton have had their share of miseries in the recent past ever since they have found their feet in the top tier of English football. He has developed into a complete package and with a four-and-a-half-year deal, Puel has sparked the chance of having one of his key men in his kit for the coming years and the bottom line is that it is a shrewd deal from the Saints to ensure that they keep pushing themselves up the ladder.
