Liverpool’s poor run of form continued as they fell to another 1-0 defeat against Southampton at Anfield, thus ending their hopes of another run to the final of the EFL Cup. It was another disjointed display from the Reds as their poor start to the New Year continued.
After a fantastic last year, where they were scoring goals for fun and looked like being the main challenger to Chelsea’s domination at the top of the table, things have fallen away spectacularly this year and the departure of Sadio Mane seems to have hurt them big time. The Senegalese international’s ability to stretch defences ensured that the opposition remained on the backfoot and his partnership with Firmino and Coutinho worked wonders for them.
But things have been iffy in the last month with a narrow 1-0 win, that too on the second attempt, over Plymouth being the only positive result in 7 games for Jurgen Klopp. They will get a chance to get back to winning ways, however, when they welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to Anfield in the 4th round of the FA Cup.
There is a popular opinion now that Liverpool need to add to the squad in January itself, or there is every chance of a similar scene unfolding and they might struggle to remain in the Top 6 if things go on like this for any longer.
PREDICTED LIVERPOOL XI VS WOLVES (4-3-3)
DEFENCE
Karius is likely to start again with the midweek match against Chelsea their next assignment which will see Mignolet line-up under the bar. There is doubt regarding Nathaniel Clyne and he might not be risked which will see Alexander-Arnold at right-back. Lovren and Matip weren’t at their best and Klavan might come in against Wolves giving them one of them a rest. Milner is in line for a rest as well which will see Moreno come in as the left-back.
MIDFIELD
While Can is not having the best of time right now, he might retain his place in the side as he is unlikely to play against Chelsea. Lucas Leiva might come in the withdrawn defensive role and Kevin Stewart is likely to be complete the trio. Henderson and Wijnaldum might well be preserved for the clash against the League leaders.
ATTACK
Woodburn is likely to come into the side and will play on the left wing. Origi will be playing up top while Lallana might get a run in the right wing position.
