With quite a number of games still to be played in the Championship, Norwich City do have a realistic chance of paving their way back to the Premier League. Merely five points behind Sheffield Wednesday (who are currently placed at the sixth spot in the league table, the last play-off spot), they need to curtail the difference in order to progress and maintain consistency as well. However, the defence still remains as one of the key areas of concern for the Canaries.
Norwich City have conceded plenty of goals this term, 40 to be precise and with the departure of Martin Olsson to Swansea City for a transfer fee of £4 million, the scenario appears to be standing pretty much against them. Moreover, the replacement they were looking for in order to fill in the void left by Olsson in the shape of Marvin Zeegelaar has reportedly refused to make a move to the Carrow Road.
This undeniably puts Alex Neil’s side in a pretty awkward position for they are spineless in the left-back slot at the moment due to the clear dearth of a formidable campaigner. Zeegelaar ticked a lot of boxes for a cunning defender whose flair and versatility is humungous. Despite the initial rejection, shouldn’t Neil go all guns blazing to rope the Sporting Lisbon’s fantastic defender and try to leave no stone unturned in order to assure him of the issues which deterred him from making a move to England.
The 26-year-old came through the ranks of Ajax and has moulded himself as someone who could ply his trade at left-wing as well in the left-back slot. It is due to the fact that he operated on the wings many a time which has made him an offensively inclined full-back. He has a decent amount of experience whilst being employed by the likes of Ajax, Rio Ave and Sporting Lisbon to name a few and no wonder why he has been on the radar of the Yellow Army.
Neil’s troops must tighten up the screws at the back, make necessary ramifications and most importantly, convince someone to fill the shoes of Olsson, well maybe Zeegelaar for that matter. The season is approaching towards its nail-biting stages for a side who are in a desperate want of a proven stalwart, signing someone like the aforesaid Dutchman does hold paramount importance. There are just a few days remaining for the curtains to fall, so Norwich City must chalk out a deal by convincing him very soon.
