Marco Silva looks set to continue his policy of signing unproven prospects as recent reports have seen the club being linked with former West Ham United midfielder Diego Poyet. Poyet is a free agent now after he cancelled his contract by mutual consent on transfer deadline day last summer.
The Hammers had to beat a number of clubs to land the young sensation after his impressive loan spells in the Championship clubs. However, things didn’t work out as expected at the London club as he managed to get only 6 appearances for the U-23 side before calling it quits last summer.
However, now the 21-year-old is keen to fix himself up with a new club and numerous sides are reportedly monitoring his situation at the moment with Premier League sides Hull City and Swansea City among those interested.
Hull have experienced huge losses in their midfield after they sold Jake Livermore to West Bromwich Albion, Robert Snodgrass to West Ham United, which was followed by a horrific injury to their experienced midfielder Ryan Mason, who had a fractured skull against Chelsea. The new boss is desperate to add reinforcements before the window closes and Poyet is one of his primary targets given his free agent status.
Poyet’s suitors also include a couple of Serie A sides, including Crotone. The Uruguay under-20 international will now consider his options over where to continue his career and a move to Hull could be a possibility given their dearth of options in the midfield and more chances of his first team action.
The son of ex-Chelsea star Gus Poyet, the youngster is a youth product of Charlton Athletic, from where he had short loan stints at West Ham United, MK Dons and Huddersfield Town, before making a permanent move to West Ham last summer. A central midfielder by nature, Poyet excels in holding the ball in the midfield and has an eye for the perfect pass. His defensive contributions are also commendable as are his good game reading abilities which helps him to intercept passes better than most players in his age bracket.
Hull have the likes of Tom Huddlestone and David Meyler in the middle of the park, who are both box-to-box midfielders and rely more on strength and instinct to keep the balance of the defence and the attack. In Poyet, Hull will get an intelligent midfielder who could provide passes from the deep. Although at 21 he is highly inexperienced and has never played in the Premier League, Silva could make the best use of him if he so chooses.
