In a major boost, Cameroon have omitted Liverpool defender Joel Matip’s name from their final 23 Man’s squad. West Brom’s Allan Nyom has also been left out from the AFCON squad.
There have been controversies regarding Matip’s selection in the African side. He hasn’t featured for them since 2014 and is one of the seven players who already made it clear that they would prefer playing for their respective clubs rather than their country.
Matip moved to Liverpool this summer and has been very effective in the Liverpool defence since his arrival. The 25-year old is currently battling an injury and hasn’t played the last five matches.
Cameroon boss Hugo Bross had previously complained that his calls to the defender went unanswered he would involve FIFA in this matter. But no action will be taken as they have been left out by the club.
Another Liverpool player Sadio Mane is poised to join his country Senegal prior to the tournament.
