Stoke City boss Mark Hughes has hailed Wayne Rooney after the forward scored his 250th goal for Manchester United to become the highest ever scorer for the club. Rooney scored from a free kick in the added time as United salvaged a point against the Potters.
Rooney surpassed sir Bobby Charlton’s record which also happened to be his 88th away goal, a Premier League record.
Hughes who himself was a striker for United paid tribute to the 31 year old, “It’s unbelievable. Sir Bobby’s record stood for 40-odd years, so it tells you how difficult it is. A lot of good strikers have been and gone in that time and not got anywhere near it.
“It’s difficult to compare players from one era to the next. In terms of the impact he’s had at United, it’s been huge, he’s won almost every trophy available, goalscoring records are falling now. He’s right up there. He’s in good company.
“He’s done that throughout his career – you only have to give top players one opportunity, and that’s what he had. He had to produce a ball that was right on the money and that’s what he’s done.
“United have done that for many years, right at the death, to enable them to get something when at that late stage you think the game’s slipping away from them.
“They’re a very good team, they played very well. They’ve got good talent, towards the end of the game they were able to bring on fresh pace and power.”
