Tottenham hotspur will take on Chelsea in what will be a massive game for both the teams. While Chelsea will want to extend their lead at the top following Liverpool’s draw against Sunderland last night, Tottenham will want to do the same and narrow the gap on the top four places.
The reverse fixture was an entertaining one to watch as Spurs held their own for most parts of the game but couldn’t deny Chelsea from making a comeback and win the game 2-1. Despite playing really well and taking the lead in the second half, Spurs ran out of steam and couldn’t make it count in what would have been a major scalp for Mauricio Pochettino this season.
The two sides have had some entertaining games in recent seasons and ahead of the important London derby, we take a look at a few of them.
Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham, May 2016, Stamford Bridge
This was the game where all the Leicester fans unanimously rooted for Chelsea to stop Spurs from picking up a win as it’d make the Foxes the Champions. Tottenham took a two-goal lead in the first half and were cruising at one point in time and the title race looked destined to go a bit longer, but Spurs bottled it in the second half to hand Leicester the title.
Chelsea, who were the defending Champions at the time, ensured that the title didn’t go to their London rivals as goals from Gar Cahill and Eden Hazard made the game level. The match then took a nasty turn as there was a massive fracas involving Mousa Dembele and Diego Costa. The former was banned for six games after appearing to poke Costa in the eye!
Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea, January 2015, White Hart Lane
The game Spurs fans will fondly remember as one of their own, Harry Kane, ripped apart the title’ aspirant’s defence with a brace that temporarily stalled Chelsea’s title march. Spurs looked up for the game from the word go and but had to come from behind. Costa’s opener was cancelled by Kane and from then on, it was all Spurs as they scored three more times in the subsequent 25 minutes to pretty much seal the game.
Chelsea gave themselves some hope when Eden Hazard scored in the 61st minute, but Spurs were in no mood to let up and managed to retake their three-goal lead through a Nacer Chadli strike, John Terry scored a consolation three minutes from time. Chelsea went on to win the league but Harry Kane had well and truly arrived after his exploits against would be champions.
Chelsea 4-0 Tottenham, Match 2014, Stamford Bridge
The first half was pretty competitive but Spurs simply capitulated in the second half. Four second half goals in 40 odd minutes made the scoreline look massive one-sided but in hindsight, Spurs didn’t play all that bad.
Younes Kaboul’s sending off in the second half didn’t hep Spurs’ cause as their top-four hopes took a beating on the night.
