Birmingham City are on fire in the ongoing transfer window as they have successfully laid their hands on their fifth signing this month. The Blues have signed Kerim Frei from Beşiktaş for a transfer fee of around £2.2 million, as the report suggests. Gianfranco Zola’s side are nine points off the nearest playoff spot (held by Sheffield Wednesday) with a game in hand and amending all the loopholes in his side is Zola’s paramount objective. Will this signing be beneficial and will this will it generate the output that is desired?
Only time will tell about the fruitfulness of this signing but at the onset, it does look like being a stupendous one. Frei is a good winger who is recognised largely because of his dribbling skills, for the pace with which he operates on the flanks and his ability to keep the ball in possession. He is someone who is something different than what Zola has at his disposal and no wonder why he has been signed to add that tinge of flair in Birmingham City’s setup.
The 23-year-old breezes past the defenders with raw pace, gets between them to create problems and stretches the opponents’ defence more often than not to ensure space for his fellow attackers. He is conventionally stationed on the left flanks and possesses a venomous trait of cutting inside the box. His career has just started, yet, the Turkish international has bagged plenty of experience and expertise under his belt, having played for Fulham in the Premier League as well.
Though he is not a prolific goal scorer, he can better his figures by growing in stature, considering that age is with him. The newcomer has always been unafraid, never refrains from taking on the opponents and ticks almost all the boxes for a commendable winger required in Championship. Birmingham City have already signed Cheick Keita, Craig Gardner, Emilio Nsue and Lukas JutKiewicz this month but signing Frei is something out of the box.
At Beşiktaş, Frei enjoyed a decent run at the Süper Lig ever since signing for them in 2013, but has seen opportunities pretty hard to come by this season and no wonder why he nodded to a move to St. Andrew’s. More than anything else, it is his experience is Champions League, Europa League and domestic league that shall come handy for Zola’s outfit who need their new wide man to deliver. A wide man was of course needed by the gaffer and he pounced on the opportunity by making an economical yet clever signing in the shape of Kerim Frei.
