Manchester City and their problems in defence are like that of a bad marriage one cannot get out of. There have been efforts and some costly efforts as well but for some reason or the other, things just don’t work out for them. Ever since Lescott and Kompany, there hasn’t been a settled centre-back pairing at the Etihad.
And while a lot of attention was diverted towards the central defenders and the attacking resources, City have failed to build up a resourceful pool of players who could make a quick transition to the first team. And while they spent truckloads of in every other position, for some reason they have been happy to let the four fullbacks play on without any apparent long-term plans to replace them for a time like this.
The four fullbacks are all above 30 and with Sagna and Zabaleta likely to move on this summer, let us take a look at 3 alternatives for them.
HECTOR BELLERIN (ARSENAL)
One player who has been continuously linked with Manchester City and even a long term contract which was recently signed by the player has not stopped that from being carried on. Considered one of the best in England and indeed in Europe right now, the right-back is a bundle of talent.
Extremely quick to cover ground, he is equally good in attack and defence and with a bright future ahead of him, there is a chance he might be City’s long-term defensive solution. But it is certain Arsenal will not let go of him and a crazy amount will be required to even tempt them.
SERGE AURIER (PSG)
The 23-year old is considered one of Europe’s most exciting right-back. The Ivorian is a fine athlete and is known more for his attacking exploits. His domineering performance against Arsenal in the group stages of the Champions League has made him an even more known face in England.
He has been likened to Dani Alves for his contributions higher up the pitch but he also possesses enough defensive attributes and his willingness to run, along with his physique helps him out in that respect.
But the player has a record of being a trouble-maker and needs to be reigned in. However, Pep will back himself to bring the best out of a promising player.
PABLO MAFFEO (MANCHESTER CITY)
City and Pep might not have to look too far for their man. Maffeo has been drafted into the first team and is slowly being afforded opportunities in light of Sagna’s injury.
But it is evident Pep wants to take a good look at him before deciding on the future course of action.
He still has a long way to go but afforded a chance against United in the EFL cup he was more than a match for Pogba and Ibra and with Pep’s record of promoting youth products from the academy, this might well be a success story. He has inexplicably been sent off to loan in mid-season but many hopefuls believe Pep wants him to be playing regularly and come back better prepared next season.
