We are just a few days away from the New Year and what comes with a New Year in 2017 is a chance for every club to bolster their squad. The winter transfer window will give Rangers an opportunity to add quality and depth to their team in order to tighten up their grip on the second spot or probably give Celtic a hard run for their money until the very last wire.
Rangers’ comeback season in the Premiership has not been the worst. They are slowly but surely finding their feet and after getting three wins in a row, the gap between them and the likes of Hearts and Aberdeen is slowly increasing. Mark Warburton should be in the market in January to add further quality to their squad and here are three areas they should focus-
Centre-forward
Rangers should ideally move for a proven goalscorer in January. Martyn Waghorn is having an injury-plagued season but still has scored 10 goals so far in all competitions. However, he has hardly been consistent in the process. Joe Garner’s confidence is seemingly low as he is failing to add goals to his game for Rangers.
Kenny Miller has had an impact in most games with his overall game but has scored just 4 goals this season. He is not getting any younger, too. Rangers’ forward line is much inferior when you compare them to Celtic’s Griffiths and Dembele and Warburton must bring in a potent goalscorer to make up the gap.
Attacking midfield
Niko Kranjcar’s injury has hurt Rangers badly and it is clearly visible. The Croat was supposed to act as the prime playmaker of the Gers this season after his move to Ibrox in the summer and started his Rangers career pretty well. However, luck was not with him as he got himself out for the rest of the season with a cruciate ligament rupture.
In his absence, Rangers have struggled for creativity and that has let them down. Warburton, therefore, should move for a playmaker in January.
Central midfield
Injuries have not been kind to Rangers at all this season, especially in the midfield department. Jordan Rossiter and Matt Crooks have found it hard to kick off their Rangers career since their summer moves due to injuries.
Josh Windass, on the other hand, has had just a better fortune than his two colleagues. With the trio struggling to stay fit and Joey Barton’s Rangers career coming to a premature end, there is a big void in the middle of the park and Warburton should try to fill it in January.
