Big things were expected from Spurs this season after their brilliant last season where they almost won the title. However, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been a bit of a letdown this campaign. They have not necessarily been bad but it is clearly evident that they lack that extra bit of firepower to challenge for the title. Too many draws, a constant injury-crisis and lack of self-belief has hurt their purpose and Pochettino will be adamant to change the scenario as soon as he can.
We are just a few days away from the January transfer window and Pochettino will certainly look for reinforcements. If reports from The Daily Star are to be believed, Spurs are weighing up a January bid for Crystal Palace’s £25 million-rated winger Wilfried Zaha.
The 24-year-old winger has been in excellent form this season for Crystal Palace even though his side have struggled to perform as a unit. The English international was a prime target of the Lilywhites earlier this summer but Pardew did not want to lose another winger after letting Bolasie go which did not let the deal happen.
Constant injuries to their attacking players have hurt Spurs badly this season. Harry Kane missed a significant part of the season. Erik Lamela is yet to come back from a lengthy spell on the sidelines while the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Heung Min-Son have all struggled to keep their consistency. Zaha’s burst of pace and directness could give a whole new dimension to Spurs’ inconsistent attack.
Zaha was always a much talked-about player but took his time to excel as a player. He burst onto the scene with Crystal Palace at a very young age and his impressive performance earned him a move to Manchester United. However, his big-money move to Manchester United turned out to be a failure. He got his playing time on loan at Cardiff City and Crystal Palace before joining his boyhood club back permanently. Since then, he has resurrected his career.
Zaha has taken his game to a whole new level this season having scored 3 goals and setting up 6 assists from 17 games. With his pace and trickery, he can unsettle any defence in the world and now his productivity has also improved.
The Englishman is just 24 now and is about to enter his peak years and could become a massive player at White Hart Lane in coming years. Pochettino has to pull this deal off at any cost to make the Lilywhites a much better squad.
