We all know that Daniel Levy is a master of the art when it comes to transfers. Over the last few years, Spurs have been exceptionally good in the transfer market. From getting a world-record fee for Gareth Bale to signing a player of Christian Eriksen’s calibre for just £11.5m, Levy has shown it again and again that he knows how to get the deals done and is a master negotiator. Given that Spurs are also expanding their stadium for which they need a huge investment, Spurs are unlikely to splash too much cash in January but they are in dire need of reinforcements, which is visible.
According to a recent report from The Mirror, Manchester United are likely to accept around £12.5million for Netherlands international Memphis Depay in January. Spurs do need a winger and Depay is a quality player without any shadow of a doubt. All he needs is confidence and a way out of Manchester where he does not feel wanted at all.
£12.5million is lesser than even the half the transfer fee which Manchester United paid for the Dutch prodigy back in the summer of 2015. He used to be the heartthrob of Dutch football back then and his former Dutch boss Louis van Gaal was the one to bring him to Old Trafford. However, his first season at the Theater of Dreams was nowhere close to good enough and under Mourinho, he has struggled even more for time on the pitch.
Depay’s return of just seven goals and seven assists in 56 appearances for United is bad but also understandable. It was only his first season in English football, a league which is much different to Dutch football and many players find it hard to adjust to such a change in surroundings.
He badly needed the backing of his manager which he did not get. Pochettino is a much better manager than Mourinho when it comes to working with young players and Depay could certainly find his best form under him.
Erik Lamela finally had a good patch Spurs in his third year at the London club. Now, he is a key player for the Lilywhites and the credit goes to the Spurs fans and Pochettino for believing in him when he failed to perform.
Depay is just 22 years of age and we all know what he is capable of. With his confidence, he could prove to be an invaluable addition to Spurs and due to the fact that his price is much low now, Spurs should not waste this opportunity.
