Aston Villa have finally found some stability in their Championship campaign this season that started quite nightmarishly. However, with no hope for a top two finish anymore, Steve Bruce is already looking at the next season.
A lot of transfers are expected at Villa Park in the next two transfer windows and a lot many names have already been linked. The gaffer has, however, stated Hull City’ star winger Robert Snodgrass to be an intriguing prospect, who he would like to bring into the club. He was, however, quick to point out that a move next month looks quite unlikely.
Snodgrass’ contract, as Guardian reported, has rejected a new contract and is unlikely to commit his future to the Tigers. Although Hull are desperate to keep him and have activated a one-year option on his contract, which would keep him till 2018, they wouldn’t like him to leave for free after that.
It was Bruce, who had signed the Scottish international back in the summer of 2014. Snodgrass has played under him for two seasons and hence, despite clubs like Middlesbrough, Newcastle United, Sunderland, West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion being after the winger, Villa stands a significant chance to landing him.
Hull are experiencing a grave striker crisis up front and if not for Snodgrass, Mike Phelan’s team could well have been out of the competition. The 29-year-old has scored five goals and two assists giving, which has given some hope to the Tigers.
The Scotsman likes to play operate on the right flank and has a knack of cutting inside at every chance, which doesn’t necessarily make him an orthodox winger. His shooting with his preferred left foot often makes life hard for the keepers and defenders.
He will definitely be an upgrade to a mediocre Aston Villa squad. Snodgrass has extended his goal scoring form from last season into this season. Last season he had four goals and seven assists in 27 games. This shows his consistency both at the Championship and Premier League level, which is not found quite often.
After almost half the season has gone by, Steve Bruce’s men are in the 13th position in the points table and as fate would have it, they will be facing Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup fixture next month. Bruce knows a move for Snodgrass isn’t happening anytime soon, and he has eyes on other players for his attacking third, which include the sensational Jordan Rhodes. However, they would surely expect Hull to drop back to the Championship, which would make things easier in his pursuit.
