Mark Warburton will be desperate to bring in reinforcements coming transfer window and as the club gets better with the season progressing despite crucial injuries, the time seems perfect to up patch the wounds wisely.
Rangers wouldn’t let Celtic get away with the title that easy and we expect the Gers to take it to the last match week (no, we don’t) maintaining a neck breaking pressure on their rivals. It’s still a long time before the season gets over and if Rangers keep their performance intact, this could be one hell of a comeback season they will talking about for years. Warburton would need beefing up in numerous of his positions, but it is the midfield that has been hurting them the most.
Nico Kranjcar’s injury was a huge blow, and the Croatian has left a huge void that needs to be filled fast. Jordan Rossiter and Matt Crooks’ inconsistent fitness issues have further added to the concern. And although Halliday and Jason Holt in the attacking midfield have momentarily held the mast, they are more combative than creative.
And given Rangers’ financial prowess, they aren’t likely to afford the astronomical transfer fees the European giants play in. Warburton would have to go for players who are not overrated, rich technically and get the job done, and most importantly won’t cost much.
Premier League has always been a favourite raiding ground for Scottish teams and it has provided them with some real gems. Warburton might find a similar gem in Charlie Adam of Stoke City. Although Rangers don’t seem to have any problems getting the ball up front at the moment, as their real gameplay currently relies on outpacing their opponents on the counter. But, doing that for 90 minutes will run them out of fuel and if the opponents manage to absorb their attack, they would run out of ideas.
They would need someone who could unlock the defence from the deep midfield and not many players in the Premier League do it better than Charlie Adam. The former Rangers player’s contract expires next June and Stoke City would definitely not like to part ways with him for free.
If they have to cash in on him, it’s next month and Rangers might get the talented midfielder in a cut-price deal. Yes, there is one-year extension option in his contract but Warburton will have to convince him. After all, Stoke City aren’t having a better shot at UEFA Champions League than Rangers.
Once a player of Rangers U20, Adam has a long way. Since debuting the English top flight football in 2010-11 season, Adam has bagged 34 goals and 31 assists. We all know how impeccable he is from set-pieces and how impactful he could be defensive. His presence as Rangers’ anchor and providing the magically measured balls to Miller and Waghorn would be a treat to watch.
