Manchester United finally look to get their game clicking after a convincing performance from the Red Devils saw off a resilient Tottenham side this past weekend. Their next opponent, Crystal Palace, haven’t had the best of seasons so far and Mourinho’s men are favourites to win the match at Selhurst Park in their midweek clash.
Alan Pardew was hugely relieved after his struggling side found an equaliser right at the end against a revived Hull City side. United’s display against Spurs indicates they will have it quite easy against a Palace side who are fighting to stay out of the relegation zone.
Defence
De Gea is a sure-shot starter. If he is fit, United don’t have a better alternative.
Antonio Valencia was booked for a silly challenge against Tottenham and Mourinho would be furious at such irresponsible behaviour from an experienced player. Darmian is likely to take his place on the right defensive flank. His display against Spurs was quite nervy and Mourinho will be needing the winger to cover for him.
The central defensive duo are expected to remain unchanged as the partnership of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo looked quite impactful. Mourinho should continue to play them regularly if he wants a settled combination at the heart of the defence.
Blind is likely to take the left-flank as Darmian will be shifted to the right. Luke Shaw still remains injured and it is quite frustrating for the manager. He might even consider selling him in January.
Midfield
The impact of a three-man midfield was once again spotted against Spurs when Mourinho deployed Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba. Pogba has often shied away from his defensive duties and always tends to be on the offensive.
Playing Carrick in the anchor position has been tremendously impactful. United’s most experienced player was like a rock against Spurs. And although he misplaces a few passes, he kept things under control for most of the time.
The duo of Pogba and Herrera were amazing on Sunday. Herrera’s intercepting abilities blended with his prowess to release wingers at the flash of an eye has been applauded by many. It was his assist that led to Mkhitaryan’s goal.
Attack
Anthony Martial hasn’t been a regular under Mourinho and it was obvious that he would lack sharpness. However, given Mourinho’s nature, he is expected to bring in Marcus Rashford on the left wing replacing the French international.
The other wing should be taken by Juan Mata. Although the Spaniard lacks the blistering pace of his Armenian teammate. He is technically supreme. Zlatan will start in the centre-forward position.
