Looking at how West Brom have fared thus far this season, you would find it very hard to believe that they are a Tony Pulis’ side. The Welsh manager has always been criticised for his defensive approach to the game even though that has brought him success at every club he managed. Probably Pulis wanted to answer his critics badly which is why West Brom are playing some brilliant attacking football this season. However, their attacking football has backfired against them of late as they lost to Arsenal and Manchester United in the last two games.
The Baggies will be up against Claude Puel’s Southampton on the New Year’s Eve and will be looking to leapfrog ahead of their opponents to the eighth place. Only one point sperate the two side and both have lacked consistency. Southampton suffered a 4-1 hammering in the midweek against Spurs despite getting the lead very early in the game. One of the Saints’ key players Nathan Redmond will not be available for the game which will be a big boost for the Baggies.
Predicted 4-2-3-1 West Bromwich Albion Lineup That Could Shock Southampton
Defence
Ben Foster, one of the best keepers in the division will be on duty between the sticks. Gareth McAuley has been a trusted man in West Brom defence for a long time now but has been poor lately. The Nothern Irishman will be keen to deliver a good showing at the heart of the defence against Southampton. The 37-year-old will be partnered by Jonny Evans at central defence. Allan Nyom, a right-back by trade, has been a regular at left-back for the Baggies this season and will keep his place.
Midfield
Claudio Yacob will keep his place at the base of midfield and will be looking to destroy the Southampton attack. Skipper Darren Fletcher will accompany the Argentine midfield enforcer in the middle of the park. We expect club-record signing Never Chadli to keep his place in the number ten position. Southampton are a team who like to keep possession and if West Brom want to salvage anything from the game, they have to negate the impact of the Southampton midfield.
Attack
Chris Brunt will keep his place on the right wing. Matt Phillips has been extremely impressive for the Baggies this season after his summer move and will keep his place on the left. Jose Salomon Rondon’s position in the team in unquestionable and he will easily keep his place up front.
