Following a much underwhelming start to the season, Manchester United’s title hopes are all but diminished, even at this early stage. But their hopes of finishing in the top four could hinge on the result this weekend when Mourinho’s side clash against Tottenham at Old Trafford. A loss will make it really hard for the Red Devils to find their way to top four by the end of the season unless the teams who are already there suffer a massive disaster which is unlikely.
Spurs have long struggled at Old Trafford but with Jose Mourinho’s side failing to secure wins, Mauricio Pochettino might be able to break the trend finally. Jose Mourinho’s team have drawn four consecutive league matches at Old Trafford, but have only been beaten once on home soil this season. Spurs are finally looking good after being able to recover from a serious injury crisis and a lack of sharpness in front of goal.
Spurs had to bid Champions League football goodbye from the group stages but qualified for the Europa League and are likely to take it seriously. They have scored eight goals in their last two games combined and will be a big test for the Red Devils. Here is the predicted Spurs lineup against Manchester United.
Defence
Hugo Lloris, the Spurs skipper, will start under the bar. Spurs had a major boost with Toby Alderweireld coming back from injury. He played more than 20 minutes against CSKA Moscow to gain his match fitness back and will certainly start against United at the heart of the defence.
Jan Vertonghen will be happy with his compatriot coming back from injury to pair up with him in central defence. Kyle Walker will start at right back whole Danny Rose will start on the left. Spurs fans will be happy to see their strongest possible back four returning for a big game.
Midfield
Eric Dier will be relieved of his central defensive duty and will switch back to central midfield. The English international is likely to pair up with Victor Wanyama in the middle of the park.
Belgian midfield maestro Moussa Dembele is likely to start in an advanced number ten position. He will surely enjoy his game with Dier and Wanyama offering defensive protection to the back four which gives him the freedom to play his best game.
Attack
Harry Kane has been enjoying his form since his comeback from injury and will start up front. Christian Eriksen is likely to start on the right flank. Dele Alli will switch to left flank with Dembele starting centrally.
