The gap has come down to one point now and a further slip up from Arsenal can finally put Tottenham above their fierce rivals if they continue their winning run against a stern Southampton side next week.
Tottenham came back strongly after their slim loss to Manchester United with two back to back convincing wins against Hull City and Burnley. However, their next opponents have managed to cause upsets on many occasions. To add to that, Spurs are winless in their last five away games, which will be a big concern when they visit Southampton.
The Saints ended their winless streak against Tottenham last season in May and they seem to have found the spirit to tackle them. Puel’s side have been impressive this season and have allowed their opponents to take only 45 shots in the league this season, which is second-best only to Chelsea (43).
Contrasting that, Tottenham are one of the only two sides to have attempted 100+ shots on target alongside Liverpool. It looks like a cracker of a match.
Defence
Hugo Lloris will take his position under the bar. His rock-solid displays in that position have garnered plaudits from many and fans are delighted that the French goalie has extended his contract with the club.
The left flank will undoubtedly be taken by Danny Rose. One of the best left-backs in Europe, he scored a stunning goal against Burnley and will be brimming with confidence. Kyle Walker will take the opposite flank. He started shaky against Burnley and had a lot to thank Lloris initially, but got into the groove later. Pochettino will hope he remains on his toes from the start this time.
The duo of Vertonghen and Dier will take the central defence. Alderweireld is a doubt with a back injury and Spurs will dearly miss him. Dier looked quite uncomfortable in the centre-back role, but it seems he is the best Pochettino has in that position at the moment.
Midfield
Moussa Dembele’s return has been a huge boost for Spurs. He has been one of the best players for Spurs this season and it’s a shame how injuries have shortened his flair at times. He is expected to start alongside Victor Wanyama this time as he seems to make more impact from the centre.
Dele Alli has again started dazzling in the number 10 role after some inhibitions following his return from injury. He’ll be expected to start there again.
Attack
Pochettino is expected to start with Eriksen on the left and Heung-Min Son on the right. Eriksen has been lethal from the right often. Sissoko’s impact has been tremendous from the bench and he is expected to make a cameo in the second half.
Harry Kane will start up front. He will be hopeful of ending his goal drought against the Saints.
