Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been prolific for Manchester United this season. Despite starting quite slowly to the season, which drew a lot of criticism, the Swede has now got into the groove scoring 8 goals in 14 appearances for the Red Devils.
However, it cannot be overlooked that the centre-forward is 35-year-old now and although he looks quite fit, he is fast approaching retirement. He may be United’s man of the moment, but he is definitely not the long-term prospect United so desperately needs.
There are academy products like Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, who have broken into the first team, but they are yet not yet ready to play at the highest level. If reports are to be believed, United are eyeing Zlatan’s former teammate at PSG, Edinson Cavani. And the Uruguayan striker is also stalling on his new deal with the French giants.
The 29-year-old old has 20 goals in 20 games for the Ligue 1 champions. He has delivered whenever afforded a run of games at Napoli and has been continuing that at PSG. He has just 18 months left on his current deal and The Express has reported that United manager Jose Mourinho is keen to bring him to Old Trafford.
PSG’s goal scoring touch has faced a bit of a knock after Ibrahimovic departed this summer. And the French giants will be looking to fill the void coming January, with Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez their number one target. This all the more indicates Cavani’s possible departure. The French giants have been pitted against Barcelona in the Champions League knockout stages and will be needing a world class replacement soon.
New boss Unai Emery has struggled to find the goal this season after Zlatan left and is looking to bring in a world class signing. The manager has been brought to get the club European success and he is apparently not seeing Cavani a part of his mega plan. Cavani is infamous for his misses as was evident in the match against Arsenal in the Champions League.
The centre-forward has been immensely inconsistent with his finishing and it could be a major concern for United too. The good thing is that the centre-forward is pretty hardworking. He has a passing accuracy of 81% and 55% shot accuracy. His height will definitely give him a big advantage in the Premier league. His link-up play with Zlatan has fetched PSG many goals last season and United are looking to get that.
With Rooney not as sharp as he once was and United moving onto the hectic schedule of Europa League and FA Cup, United would really be needing more options up front.
