We have seen many high-profile deals between Manchester United and Real Madrid in the past. Both clubs have an exceptional pulling power thanks to both their stature and financial status. Manchester United were not a club who used to make big money transfers a few years back but after in the post-Ferguson era, they are starving for success which is one of the many reasons behind them going for big money signings like Paul Pogba.
The Independent claims that we could see the two iconic clubs involved in another major transfer. Anthony Martial, world’s most expensive teenager, has found life hard under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford. On the other hand, James Rodriguez has frozen out at Real Madrid since the appointment of Zinedine Zidane. The Independent reports that we could see a swap deal between the two clubs.
So, how will fit at Manchester United? The Colombian certainly needs a move. A player of his standards deserves to play week in week out for any big club and Real Madrid have failed to offer him that. His struggle for playing time is mostly due of that fact that Zidane likes to use a 4-3-3 system rather than 4-2-3-1 where Rodriguez flourished in the number ten role under former boss Ancelotti.
Rodriguez needs to choose his next destination very carefully. His career is at stake and joining a team managed by Mourinho might prove to be a costly decision from the Colombian golden boy. He is an out and out creative player who offers his best when deployed as the number ten but can also play on either flank but he cannot offer what Mourinho wants from his attacking players.
Many attacking players have struggled under Mourinho over the years. The Portuguese boss is a fan of using 4-2-3-1 but wants all his 3 attacking midfielders to track back every time when the team is in danger which is not the ideal. Eden Hazard is the biggest example of this. Rodriguez is a classic attacking midfielder with every ability that a creative player dreams of having. He can score from direct free kicks, can unlock the most resolute defence with his deadly vision.
The reason why Martial has looked off-colour this season is Mourinho only. A flamboyant wide player like him offers very little defensively and that is why he has gone out of favour. James Rodriguez is now at a point in his career where he cannot afford to take a wrong decision and joining Manchester United would be a very poor decision from him.
