David Moyes returns to Old Trafford on the Boxing Day with his relegation-threatened Sunderland side. Manchester United’s recent form has been impressive as they are looking to close in the gap on the fourth spot. On the other hand, courtesy of Sunderland’s recent resurgence in form, they are 18th in the table now and will be keen to get outside the danger zone for the first time this season with an inspirational win at Old Trafford. David Moyes does know the atmosphere closely and might make his return count.
Here are three key battles those could decide the game.
Zlatan Ibrahimović vs Lamine Kone
Despite a slump in form in a few games, Zlatan Ibrahimović’s debut season has gotten off to a fantastic start. The Swedish striker’s 11 Premier League goals put him third in the Premier League, behind only Alexis Sanchez and Diego Costa. We have to wait and see if the Swedish superstar can keep up his form when he spearheads the United attack against Sunderland.
Sunderland must find a way to stop the in-form talismanic forward and it will be the job for Lamine Kone. The 27-year-old is the best defender Sunderland have right now and he does excel in the air which is also the strongest area in Zlatan’s game.
Didier N’dong vs Ander Herrera
Ander Herrera’s inclusion in the team is one of the reasons why United are doing so well of late. The Spaniard covers absolutely every blade of grass on the pitch and also makes the team tick with his passing. He is defensively strong, hard-working, hard-tackling and a danger with the ball at his feet.
Sunderland have to deal with the former Athletic Club midfielder if they want to salvage anything from this game. Sunderland midfielder Didier N’dong has also been impressive of late and had an exceptional display against Watford last week to win his side the game 1-0. The two industrious midfielders clashing in the middle of the park will be an exciting showdown and the winner of this one could win his side the game.
Victor Anichebe vs Antonio Valencia
It has pretty much been all-Defoe for Sunderland since last season. However, in recent weeks, Anichebe has proven his worth and is doing a decent job for the Black Cats. They are still reliant on Defoe but know that there is another player who can fetch them goals. He has scored three goals in eight appearances, only six of which were starts.
He has been impressive in a wide target man role and will be looking to impress against the Red Devils. Valencia has been immense for United at right-back this season both defensive and attacking wise but he will face a much different challenge this week against Anichebe.
