England boss Gareth Southgate has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will remain the captain of England team. Clouds were hovering over his future after drunken pictures of him surfaced on some of the leading dailies of UK. Rooney was quick to apologise to the FA and his England boss after the incident. Rooney was not in the squad in England’s 0-0 draw against Slovenian but was involved in the Three Lions 3-0 drubbing of Scotland.
There were rumours that the Manchester United forward could be stripped of the captaincy but the England boss shrugged off the rumours, “Wayne Rooney is the England captain,
“I have said that at the beginning of my interim period.”
Southgate was recently handed the coaching job permanently on a four-year contract. The former England boss was appointed on an interim basis after Sam Allardyce decided to call it quits after a controversy.
He went on to add, “I have only selected him to start two out of the four matches we have had. It is not a case that Wayne expects to play every game. It is important we develop more leaders in that group, give other opportunities to lead.
“Being an England player comes with additional responsibility. I don’t think laying down the law is necessary with this group of players.
“There has to be respect and treat them as adults and there has to be trust between coach and players. There has to be guidelines but players have to take leadership in that.”
