The Premier League consists of a plethora of world class players but the majority of them are attacking midfielders in nature. The likes of Hazard, De Bruyne, Sanchez, Silva, Coutinho and many more have taken the level of quality and competition to another level. But unlike other weeks they haven’t had the same amount of impact on the results. This week the defenders and the strikers stepped up big time and stamped their authority on the game and overshadowed the men in the middle.
With Aguero missing, we have two unlikely candidates who have powered their way into the top slots with their masterful displays. Let us take a look at the top 3 strikers of the week.
JAY RODRIGUEZ
The Southampton man has been probably the unluckiest man when it comes to injuries. He burst onto the scene at St. Mary’s and mesmerised one and all with his silky moves and his fluid dribbling ability and his finishing prowess. His performances had caught the eye of many big clubs and Manchester City were reportedly eyeing a big money move when he suffered the horrible injury ruling out for seasons. But he seems to be back and while the earlier spark will take time to return, last day’s performance was nonetheless a timely reminder of what he is capable of. A brace served the purpose as they ran out 3-1 victors over Bournemouth.
ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC
Having run up a six-match blank from mid-September, it seemed unfeasible that Zlatan Ibrahimovic would ever recover and perform at the same as he did at his old clubs. But then we should never say. With Aguero banned and Harry Kane fluffing his lines, the stage is set for Ibrahimovic to rule the Premier League.
He started off confidently before petering away a bit. But 7 goals in his last 6 games proves that it was a temporary dip and he is back doing what he does best. His brace was pivotal in Manchester United’s victory and with a favourable fixture list coming up, he could wreak havoc.
ALVARO NEGREDO
The Beast, as he was fondly called at City, seems to be regaining his confidence. His twin strikes displayed the hallmark of a striker brimming with confidence and ready to fire over what could be a pivotal spell in Middlesbrough’s season. Boro have lacked a cutting edge this season and they need the likes of Ramirez and Negredo to fire in unison.
