The Daniel Sturridge conundrum
There is no denying that Daniel Sturridge is still Liverpool’s most talented striker, but his attitude and injury records speak otherwise of what could have been the rise and rise of the Reds forward.
Sturridge is yet to score in the league for the Reds with his goals coming in the EFL cup where he continues to shine for the club but in the league, it has been a totally different story.
Sturridge has found himself down the pecking order behind an in-form Divock Origi who has grabbed the opportunity with both hands and has scored in five of his last six starts.
However, he showed exactly why Klopp rates him by coming on and playing a hand in the late goal the Reds managed in the Merseyside derby.
Opinion: Keep Sturridge until the summer, he is still a quality bench option and could offer the team the edge when required if fit.
Academy Talents: Too soon or the right time to use them?
The Liverpool academy has had its hits and misses in recent times, this season though there has been a buzz about the talents coming out in the form of Ovie Ejaria, Sheyi Ojo and Trent Alexander Arnold to name a few along with Ben Woodburn who scored on his debut against Leeds United in the EFL quarter-finals. The big question is that yes there is undoubted talent in the youth system, but are they good to replace established names in the first team?
It is a big risk given where Liverpool are in the league table. Choosing to field inexperienced youth players instead of buying potential first team talents in the window could raise questions towards the end of the season.
Yes, the academy players offer good options going into the business end of the season, but it is a risk which Klopp had to take a call on. Marko Grujic who came in the summer is yet to taste first team action in the league is another option Klopp can use in the worst case scenario.
