Liverpool have a chance to end a good year on a high as they’ll take on Manchester City on New Year’s Eve. The Reds are six points behind Chelsea and will hope the Blues drop points to narrow down the gap. The New Year will start with the transfer window opening and Jürgen Klopp has already said that if there are good options available, Liverpool won’t shy away from trying to sign players.
The Reds aren’t at their full strength as Philippe Coutinho has been missing for a few weeks. His return is likely to coincide with Sadio Mane’s departure for the AFCON which will be another blow. Liverpool do have a pretty impressive playing XI but don’t necessarily have the best depth amongst the top six sides.
Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi are available in the attack but the games will come thick and fast, so quality replacements are needed for Sadio Mane. One of the players who is being linked with the Reds is Netherlands attacker Quincy Promes.
The 24-year old is creating some waves for his club Spartak Moscow and is a move to a bigger club is just a matter of time. After breaking onto the scene with FC Twente, Promes earned a move to Moscow and has been on fire for them. In 72 games, he’s managed 37 goals in what are jaw-dropping numbers. This season, he’s managed six goals and six assists and his style is similar to Sadio Mane. Promes often plays on the right and averages 3.1 key passes every game. (Stats via Whoscored)
The biggest advantage that Liverpool will get if they sign him will be his versatility. He is at his productive best when played on the right but he can be deployed on the left as it enables him to cut in and make something happen.
Liverpool’s front three have the trait of interchanging positions and Promes could be another brilliant addition if they can manage to sign the lad. He’s pretty good with the ball at his feet and has a trick or two in his locker to beat his man or simply outpace him with a lightning burst of speed. His stats show that his end product is good as well.
Jürgen Klopp’s side have already missed out on Julian Draxler this season but have hopes of signing Promes. What’ll help his cause in the Premier League is that he has a few years of top flight football outside Netherlands already. We’ve seen players struggling to cope with the pace of the league when they jump ship from the Eredivisie. Memphis Depay, Jordy Clasie and Vincent Janssen have struggled since their move from the Netherlands but Promes could follow a different route.
