Leeds United’s promotion hopes are getting stronger and stronger every week. Garry Monk’s side are in some form right now and after a long time, the Leeds fans will be really hopeful about their promotion hopes. With yet another win in the Championship beating Brentford 1-0, the Whites stay in the race for a playoff spot. They are right now fifth in the League table with a 2-point cushion over seventh-placed Derby County.
Despite Leeds’ good recent form, there is no breathing space in the race for a playoff spot. Only nine points separate the third-placed Reading from 13-placed Aston Villa and any dip in form can cost the Whites dearly and Monk will be well aware of the fact.
According to recent reports, Leeds United are in talks with West Ham United over a deal to sign young striker Ashley Fletcher in the upcoming winter transfer window.
In the current top 13 in the table, only four teams have scored lesser or equal number of goals than the Whites. Chris Wood has been excellent in front of the goal this season having scored 14 goals in just 25 games but Leeds do lack a quality striker who can deputise for the Kiwi international in his absence. Marcus Antonsson has been a huge flop at Elland Road since his summer switch and there is no other option at Monk’s disposal.
The Sun reports that the Whites want to take the West Ham striker on loan, having missed out on his permanent signature over the summer. West Ham could allegedly demand around £2million for his signature in January and it will be a good investment in the long run for Leeds. He is only 21 years of age now and could be a big success at Elland Road.
A big athletic striker with a good eye for goals and someone who also has a good ability to dribble past defenders, Fletcher is a modern-day complete kind of forward. He joined West Ham from Manchester United in the summer and did show flashes of his quality just when West Ham were struggling for their attacking firepower.
Giving Fletcher some first-team football at Elland Road in a loan deal would be a smart move, but selling him in January for just £2million is one of the last things West Ham and manager Bilic should consider. From Leeds’ perspective, he can certainly prove to be a decent backup option for Wood.
