Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t deserve to win the Ballon d’Or, according to ex-Barcelona midfielder Xavi. The Real Madrid star had an excellent last year as he captained Portugal to their maiden Uefa Euro 2016 and won the Uefa Champions League with Real Madrid. The Portuguese had scored a staggering 51 goals for his club and country. He is now one short of reaching Lionel Messi’s five Ballon d’Or awards.
Xavi who played a record 743 matches for the Catalans believes his former teammate Lionel Messi deserved the 2016 Ballon d’Or over winner Cristiano Ronaldo, “They counted the major trophies but there are other years in which they didn’t use that to award the best player in the world.
“Leo Messi is the best despite the trophies that someone else might have won.”
It is not the first time that Xavi has criticised Ronaldo. Earlier also he tried to downplay Ronaldo, “Ronaldo is extraordinary but compared to Messi, for me and for everyone who likes football, there can be no comparisons.”
