Eight back to back victories have taken Chelsea to the top of Premier League table and registered Antonio Conte’s men as title favourites for the 2016-17 campaign. A change of formation, as well as a set of regulars in starting eleven week in week out, have been the key to their recent resurgence. However, winter is coming and the Blues are plotting a move for Fiorentina winger Federico Bernardeschi during the upcoming transfer window.
The 22-year-old prodigy was handed his international debut by former Azzurri boss Antonio Conte and also included in Italy’s UEFA Euro 2016 squad. Conte, a big admirer of Bernardeschi, is keen of a reunion and as per reports from Calciomercato, he is preparing a bid around £38 mil for the youngster. Bernardeschi, who usually operates from the right-hand flanks, will provide competition for Pedro and Willian who are currently being rotated in Chelsea’s starting lineup.
The 6 feet tall Serie A sensation reminds of Gianfranco Zola who enjoyed seven wonderful campaigns with Chelsea ( 1996-2003) and still hailed as one of Premier League’s greatest ever foreign recruit due to his majestic ball control, dribbling ability, creative approach and technical intelligence. Although a trequartista, Zola was august in several attacking roles and his low centre of gravity enabled him with great balance, pace and agility that allowed him to continue his playing career for around 22 seasons altogether.
A loan spell with second-tier outfit Crotone a couple of seasons back helped Bernardeschi to flourish and gain senior experience to thrive in Serie A. He was then recalled by Fiorentina, his boyhood side, and took part in the 2014-15 campaign. Despite injury concerns and limited opportunities, the Italian was impressive with the Viola and was handed number 10 shirt at the start of the 2015-16 season.
He lived up to the expectations with consistency and all-around performances, most notably against Europa League counterparts FC Basel where he netted a brace in a tricky away fixture. He was awarded AIAC Football Leader Under-21 Award for the 2015–16 campaign and currently enjoying an astounding season with seven goals and an assist in 14 Serie A appearances.

Bernardeschi is primarily a left-footed winger who loves to operate from the right-hand side. He is applauded for his dribbling skills, directness, sense of positioning and goal-scoring attribute. His pace, as well as physical and aerial presence, define his all-around potential. He, however, needs regular game-time and top flight experience before a switch to Premier League football. Hence, Conte might have to wait until summer before acquiring his services from Fiorentina who are in no hurry to sell their brightest prospect.
Chelsea have already raided Fiorentina once during summer when they brought in Marcos Alonso for a fee of around £23 million. The Spaniard has been pivotal in Chelsea’s comeback and adapted perfectly in a left wing-back role. A move for Bernardeschi will see the ex-Real Madrid youngster reunite with his former colleague.
Comparing him with Gianfranco Zola might be untimely and the debates over “Next Zola” or “First Bernardeschi” will go on, but Chelsea are absolutely going to be enriched with another great piece of business if the deal finally takes its place.
