European giants are all on high alert after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang stated in a recent interview that he is unsure if Borussia Dortmund will remain his club next season. Among the clubs with whom he was heavily linked last summer is the affluent Manchester City and Pep Guardiola will be hot on his heels if there is even a minuscule chance that he is considering a move outside.
The 2015 African Footballer of the Year said in a recent interview, “I don’t know if I will stay… I just think about playing good football right now. I want to give my best and win titles. I just think about the sport and nothing else. Last year I scored 18 goals before Christmas. I hope I can do better this year. But I also want to focus on the second half of the season.”
City, however, will have to compete with heavyweights Real Madrid and Manchester United, if they would want to land him at Etihad next summer. Of course, the Gabon international is not a January target as Dortmund will under no condition leave the in-form striker mid-season, but he highly unlikely to stay there so long despite having a contract at Dortmund that runs till 2020.
He has been in prolific form for Dortmund this season scoring 15 goals in 12 appearances in Bundesliga and 3 goals in 3 Champions League appearances. His shot accuracy is a whopping 69%, which is better than most high profile strikers at the moment.
At 187cm, he is physically supreme and could be Premier League’s best striker if City manage to get him. His average passing accuracy is 76% and wins 40% of his average duels. A Milan youth product, Aubameyang was loaned off to numerous clubs before he found his incredible form in Bundesliga.
His finishing prowess is of the highest quality and his pace and strength on the counter could be a huge asset for any club. He knack of cutting inside and playing the ball off the ground quite often makes him lethal in front of the goal.
With his attacking elements and instincts, Aubameyang could very easily get into the City first team. City’s other attacking options apart from Sergio Aguero are Wilfred Bony and Kelechi Iheanacho. With Bony quite certainly not in Guardiola’s plans, Aubameyang’s inclusion would mean lesser playing time for Iheanacho. However, with him potentially playing alongside Aguero, City’s forward lineup could easily be the best in the league.
