Rangers managed to see off a late fightback from Hamilton Academical and seal their third successive win in a row. The Gers won 1-2 at New Douglas Park which means that the Accies’ poor record against the Glasgow giants continues. In 78 years, Hamilton have never beaten the Gers in League.
Mark Warburton made a big change in personnel by selecting out of form Martyn Waghorn ahead of Kenny Miller in the starting XI. The gamble did pay off. Waghorn, Rangers’ stellar performer last season, scored both goals. He scored the opener just before the half-time break and his second came in just a few minutes after the restart.
Hamilton had their chances but failed to take them. Dougie Imrie pegged one back for the Accies in the 77th minute that gave the game a nervy finish but Rangers hung on and closed the gap on Celtic to eight points although the Hoops can make it 11 again tonight.
Here are the Rangers player ratings from the game.
Wes Foderingham: 6/10
Did not face too many challenges. Could not have done anything for the goal.
Lee Hodson: 7/10
Was superb defensively and showed why he deserves to start at right-back. Was always aware of the situations. Made a few strong forward bursts.
Rob Kiernan: 7/10
Was brilliant in the air. Calm and composed display.
Danny Wilson: 7/10
A brilliant game from the former Liverpool man. Carried the ball nicely from the back and passed well. The Scot’s composure is praiseworthy.
Lee Wallace: 7.5/10
A constant threat down the left flank and created Waghorn’s second with a deadly cross into the box.
Jason Holt: 7/10
Engine! Was all over the pitch. Made a lot of solid tackles and controlled the game.
Andy Halliday: 5/10
A rare mistake from his cost his side the goal. However, his recent performances will certainly make the fans forget about one bad day in office.
James Tavernier: 6/10
Full of energy but lacked the end product. Got a number of chances to get on the score sheet but failed to convert.
Barrie McKay: 7/10
A decent game from the attacker who caused havoc with his pace and directness. Worked the keeper on a few occasions.
Joe Garner: 6/10
A typical Garner-esque performance. Did everything except score.
Martyn Waghorn: 9/10
Decisive! What a game from the 26-year-old. Scored both goals and was a constant threat to the Accies defence.
