Liverpool maintained their 6-point gap with Chelsea as they came up with a smash and grab 1-0 win over Manchester City. The Sky Blues, who had only won once previously at Anfield, failed to turn up in the first half as a Wijnaldum header, separated the two sides at the break.
The game, which promised a lot did not really meet up to the expectations as both technically brilliant teams cancelled each other out. In the end, it was decided by the finest of margins- a headed goal by the former Newcastle United man who scored only his 2nd goal in a Liverpool shirt.
The game was not reminiscent of recent City-Liverpool encounters where the Reds have comprehensively outplayed them. It was a lot tighter and both teams were unwilling to take too much of a risk, which resulted in a slightly stifled encounter.
Manchester City thus have fallen 10 points behind Chelsea at the halfway point in the season and it will take a mighty effort from them to close the gap with Chelsea looking impossible to beat now.
Klopp will be happy with his team’s display which they achieved without the services of Coutinho and Matip.
The BEST And The WORST Liverpool Players Rated From Their Incredible Win Over Manchester City.
MIGNOLET- 6/10
Largely untroubled by a quiet City attack.
CLYNE- 6/10
Really started to affect the game in the second half. Manchester City did not have much joy down his side, though.
LOVREN- 6/10
Shackled Aguero with a fair bit of help from Klavan. Wasn’t put under a whole lot of pressure, though.
KLAVAN- 7.5/10
There were a few nervous faces when he picked up an early yellow. But was a rock at the back since then and marshalled the defence perfectly for the rest of the match.
MILNER- 7.5/10
Probably the best left-back in the league on current form. Shackled Sterling well and was a constant thorn on both ends of the pitch for City.
