It took a brace from Zlatan Ibrahimović to beat a resilient West Bromwich Albion side at Hawthorns on Saturday, who looked quite dangerous at times and might have found the equaliser if the towering Swede hadn’t killed off the game early in the second half.
The win keeps Manchester United in good pace with the top four who are operating three points above Mourinho’s men. Here’s how Manchester United players fared against Tony Pulis’ robust tactics.
David De Gea (8) – The Spaniard didn’t have much to do for most parts of the game but produced a crucial save from Brunt.
Valencia (8) – After his not so good performance against Tottenham and serving a suspension in the midweek, the wing back was back to form. It was his great ball to Lingard for Ibrahimović’s goal.
Jones (7.5) – He is responsible for the disciplined defence United have at the moment. Albion striker Rondon came to the match on the back of a hat-trick, but Jones kept him quiet in the entire game.
Rojo (7.5) – He might not be tactically supreme as a defender, but it is his combativeness which has earned him plaudits.
Darmian (7) – He has been played out of position quite often this season but he hasn’t taken much time to adapt. He could be a really good player if given regular game time. He had a brilliant left footed shot to set up Lingard.
Carrick (7.5) – The most important player in the United team undoubtedly. He adds good balance to the team and even at his age, controls the game in midfield.
Herrera (7) – The perfect partner for Carrick to have by his side in the midfield battle. The duo have clicked well together as Herrera makes up for Carrick’s lack of energy considering his age.
Rooney (7.5) – Was really unfortunate to hit the bar that would have helped him equal the sought after record. He worked quite hard on the left flank. He has to start delivering soon as Mkhitaryan is coming for that role and fast!
Pogba (8) – He is a world-class player and his footwork reflects that aptly. He didn’t seem to make any mistake on the night but was unlucky not to get a goal.
Lingard (8) – He has earned his place in the first team. His movement looks so confident and it was his brilliant cross that set up the goal for Zlatan. However, he missed an easy chance.
Zlatan (8.5) – It was really difficult to win in such difficult conditions as West Bromwich Albion hardly left any breathing space. Only a top-notch striker could score a goal of so little creation and Ibrahimović is the man to land the coup de grace. His tackle on Dawson was pretty nasty and he deserves punishment for it.
