Southampton have slowly but surely established themselves as a reckoned force in English football over the last few years but at the same time, have made an identity for themselves which the fans would not like. They have become a selling club in the last three years letting their best players go on a consistent basis. Lallana, Lambert, Lovren, Schneiderlin, Shaw, Mane, Pelle, Wanyama- all have left the club and it seems that the trend is likely to go on and on.
The next player who seems to be on his way out of Southampton is skipper Jose Fonte after rejecting a new contract. The Guardian claims that Southampton have agreed to sell defender José Fonte in January if they receive a suitable offer after the Portugal international turned down an improved contract.
Fonte is nothing short of a legend at St. Mary’s for what he has done for the club since joining them in 2010 when they were in League One and now they are just one draw away from making the knockout stage of the Europa League. But, the Saints have to prepare for life without him. Here are three potential destinations of the Southampton defender-
Manchester United
The Red Devils were linked heavily with the Portuguese defender throughout the summer and reports claim that they are looking to renew their interest in the Euro Cup winner whose contract is up for expiry in 18 months. Even though he is 32 now, Fonte seems to have 2-3 years left in him at the top level. The Euro cup winner deserves to play for a big club now and would be an important addition to Mourinho’s United side.
Everton
Everton are in a dire need for defensive reinforcements after their recent slump in form. The toffees started their era under Ronald Koeman pretty well but their joy was short-lived. Ashley Williams has not done a good job at central defence since his move in the summer.
Jagielka is at the dusk of his career and looks done at the top level. The less we talk about Funes Mori, the better it is. Fonte reuniting with Koeman at Goodison Park could prove to be a brilliant deal for Everton.
West Ham United
West Ham’s season thus far has been a big letdown and the key reason behind that is their defensive disaster. The Hammers have the funds to make Fonte happy with his wages even though West Ham won’t be step up in Fonte’s career.
The Portuguese international is miles better than any of the current West Ham defenders and can shore up their defence. If West Ham can pull off this deal, it could prove to be a season-changing one for the club.
