This season hasn’t been the best for Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer. The Austrian joined Tottenham in the summer of 2015 and had an encouraging first season, but it hasn’t been that way this time.
He was already down the pecking order behind Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld and when he got a good opportunity to change that this season with Alderweireld sidelined for a month with an injury, he failed to take it. His own goal against Arsenal pretty much summed up his performance so far.
Reportedly, the Austrian defender has been lined up for a return to the Bundesliga, with Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg are monitoring his progress. However, Wimmer signed a five-year contract with Tottenham last July and given Mauricio Pochettino’s style, he is going to give the player some more time to adjust before deciding finally.
Wimmer is more likely to be on a short loan somewhere within English Premier League, to regain his composure at the back than move permanently. There could be quite a number of interesting clubs where Wimmer could brush his skills and get a first team time to adapt to the League faster. We look at 3 destinations perfect for the 24-year-old.
Southampton- The Saints are reportedly eyeing the Austrian international in the upcoming transfer window. With Jose Fonte, almost an imminent departure either this winter or next summer, and Virgil van Dijk a top target for Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool, Puel will be desperately seeking a centre back who can hold the Saints’ backline. Southampton could be the best place for Wimmer to get sharpened.
West Ham United- The Hammers are having a similar trend now as they had last summer. They are linked with almost all players in the market and given their current crisis, Slaven Bilic will surely be expected to make numerous signings to bolster his under-performing side.
The West Ham United backline has been faltering dangerously so far and their recent win over Hull City portrayed yet another atrocious display. Bilic will have to fix that and fast if they are to avoid relegation this season. And Wimmer could just be the answer.
Crystal Palace- The Eagles have been one of the worse teams this year and although much is to be blamed on Alan Pardew for his faltering tactics, Palace doesn’t have the edge at the back to prevent top teams from scoring. With such an option available, Palace would be stupid not to fortify their ageing defensive partnership. Wimmer could have a testing time at Selhurst Park, who are most likely to fight a relegation battle when the season nears its end.
