Bastian Schweinsteiger is one of those few players who is loved fondly by each and every football fan in the world. You have to feel for the legendary German midfielder for being so badly treated by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho. Right after the Portuguese gaffer took charge at Old Trafford, Schweinsteiger became an outcast at the Theater of Dreams and had to train with the development side for months.
The former German skipper, however, made a return to first-team training last week but it remains unlikely that he will pull on a Manchester United kit ever again.
The Daily Star claims that Everton are monitoring the situation of the World Cup winner at Old Trafford and are looking to bring him to Goodison Park on a loan deal. It is also reported that the German earns almost around £200,000 a week at United but the Old Trafford club may be prepared to subsidise half his wages if a loan can be agreed.
It is indeed sad to see how desperate United are to ship an icon like Schweini out of the club despite going through such a tough run of form. His experience at the highest level could have come in use right now to drag the Red Devils out of the crisis. However, we all know how stubborn Jose is.
One’s pain is another’s gain. Everton are in a dire need for reinforcements as well as an inspiration. After their 5-0 hammering at the hands of Chelsea on Saturday, Everton are in a crisis right now having won just one of their last seven games. Ronald Koeman did start his reign at Goodison Park on a strong note but has a serious situation in his hands right now. Bastian Schweinsteiger is exactly that kind of a player who can take them out of this crisis with his leadership skills and experience.
Still only 32, Schweni still has plenty to offer at the highest level. Yes, his fitness is not at the level that it used to be and the midfield general has also lost a couple of yards of pace but 32 is not an age when you can call a world class player like him ‘finished’.
James McCarthy is not particularly rated highly by Koeman and has struggled for fitness while Gareth Barry is 35 now. Schweini can easily trump both of them for a starting berth in midfield alongside Idrissa Gueye.
Everton are now an ambitious club under the ownership of Farhad Moshiri and that is why a manager like Koeman was brought in this summer. The process of making the Toffees a giant in English football from a club that finished in the bottom half for the last two seasons is not an overnight thing. What Everton lack is a leader, someone who stands out from the rest and in Bastian Schweinsteiger, they will get such a player.
