Mathieu Debuchy’s career took a turn for the worse ever since he decided to join Arsenal. The lure was obvious and the offer hard to resist. And the prospect playing under Arsene Wenger was also admittedly one of the reasons for his move from Newcastle United. But it hasn’t been the smoothest of journeys till now. In fact, it has been one of the most unfortunate and untimely declines of one’s career. Although he did and does suffer from injuries, the emergence of Hector Bellerin also spelt almost a death knell on his Arsenal career.
Designated the 2nd choice and sometimes the 3rd choice he stagnated and failed to take his opportunities. Now back after a loan spell at FC Girondins Bordeaux, he has again succumbed to injury at the very beginning of the chance he got due to Bellerin’s absence. With the Frenchman determined to leave the club for new pastures, let us take a brief look at the 3 clubs where he can possibly move-
WEST HAM UNITED
The Hammers have been dismal this season and with their lofty ambitions already crushed, they need to re-assess their options. In trying to focus solely on a big money striker, they paid the price of overlooking the other areas of the pitch. With Sam Byram injured and veteran free-signing Álvaro Arbeloa failing to settle down at this stage of his career, Bilic has again used Antonio on the right-side of the backline. The sight of their highest scorer playing at right wing-back makes one yearn for a conventional player in that position. And Debuchy has the attributes to enhance the squad and provide a different dimension.
MARSEILLE
There are strong reports in France about Debuchy’s move to Marseille. Manager Rudi Garcia is desperate to add to his struggling side and looks at the Frenchman as the ideal candidate. Debuchy could be set for a reunion with his old boss Garcia who he was successful with at Lille having won a league and cup double. A switch to the Stade Velodrome in the Winter transfer window would be the second consecutive move to the French league under Arsene Wenger having gone on loan to Bordeaux last season.
WEST BROMWICH ALBION
The Baggies have been quietly impressive this season and Tony Pulis will be looking to carry on with his brand of football as it has paid moderate dividends till now. West Brom have Nyom and Dawson but with Nyom being played at left-back and talks being of ending Brendon Galloway’s loan, the need of a right-back arises. And Debuchy will provide more than competitive option and also enhance their squad.
