Although Spurs are have been successful in keeping their unbeaten run this season, not losing a single match in the Premier League, they have struggled in finding the back of the net. Their bright start has been marred by 4 draws on the trot that has seen them dropping out of the top four bracket to the fifth position.
The main reason is the mixed performance on the individual level. While the defenders have shown a resilient and disciplined performance at the back the forwards have been largely toothless. T4O takes at looks at 3 stars and 3 duds of the Tottenham squad this season.
The Stars
Hugo Lloris
It goes without saying that Tottenham’s current unbeaten run is largely because of the French wall standing between the sticks for them. He already has 4 clean sheets out of the 9 appearances. According to Squawka, his average saves per game are 2 and the average claim success rate is 89 %. He has been brilliant in the goal this season and his ball distribution is really commendable.
Mousa Dembele
He has been the main man in the midfield for Pochettino this season and this was proven rightly in their last match against Arsenal. Although he is yet to score a goal, he had created five chances for his team in five appearances. His average passing accuracy is 93 percent and he is adept both in the offensive and defensive role.
Son Heung-Min
Son has scored four goals this season, creating 16 chances and two assists. He has completed 191 passes this season with a pass accuracy of 81%, of which 50% were forward passes. The little figure has an agile presence on the wings and it is very difficult for defenders to mark. Although his defensive contributions are not that good, he has often proved to be lethal while coming off the bench.
The Duds
Victor Janssen
The forward has been a big disappointment this season. He has been given more chances than he deserves by Pochettino, who seems to still have confidence in the Belgian. Spurs’ main striker, Harry Kane’s absence mainly led to Janssen having his chances. The Dutchman has managed to score just once in 11 League appearances, not the goal return Spurs wanted for an expensive striker. With just 40 percent passing accuracy, he seems devoid of any confidence.
Kevin Wimmer
Although he hasn’t seen the most of the first team chances like Victor Janssen, he has been a regular in the League Cup squad in which Spurs were recently ousted by Liverpool. In his first start of the Premier League game against Arsenal, he scored an own goal from a Mesut Ozil free-kick. His passing accuracy is 77% and average duels won in 43%. The 23-year-old has to improve and fast. With Toby Alderweireld out with injury, this could really be his chance.
Eric Lamela
He has had a mixed season so far where he has been good as well as bad at the moment. He has scored 1 goal in 9 appearances and also had an assist, which is poor by his standards if compared to last season. Although he has created 15 chances until now, the average shot accuracy has been 58% and his defensive contribution has been very poor.
