The first North London derby of the season is over and while there aren’t many neutrals on this day, the few of the ones there are will concur that the 1-1 scoreline is probably just about right at the end of 90 minutes.
Arsenal, predictably, started the match brightly and had the lion’s share of the possession along with the better chances but ironically the goal came from a Tottenham player as Wimmer inadvertently nodded the ball into his own net when under pressure from two Arsenal players. Spurs started the second half brightly and 11 minutes into the half it was Koscielny whose clumsy challenge on Mousa Dembele earned a penalty for the Lilywhites and it was no surprise that Harry Kane stepped up and converted it in a brave manner.
With Manchester City dropping points, it was Chelsea who took advantage last night and it was upto Arsenal to complete the job and go top before the International break. But it was not to be and the huge roar that went around Anfield, where they are getting ready for the match against Watford, signifies the team who are the happiest with the result of the proceedings at the Emirates.
The usually effervescent Ozil and Sanchez were not at their absolute best and although Ozil had 78 touches, they weren’t the most creative ones. And the mood of the Tottenham fans was apparent as there was mostly relief at having not lost, especially after the demoralising midweek loss against Bayer Leverkusen. It’s not to say that there aren’t issues because there are. Tottenham have really struggled to score from open play and today’s goal again came by the virtue of a penalty.
As for Arsenal, they will be disappointed at not seizing the chance to go top in a month which is traditionally considered a poor one for them. The final pass was lacking today and truth be told, both sets of fans and management staff would be knowing a 1-1 draw was perhaps the fair result in the end.
With the match done and dusted with, let us take a look at the reactions coming in from twitter.
I hate Clattenburg so bad…. And @Arsenal doesn’t have the guts today to finish the job. Goodbye top of the table. #NorthLondonDerby
