We have come to the end of another exhilarating game week where the goals flowed and the melee at the top of the table just got a whole lot busier. The 4 sides at the top of the table had a brilliant game week with Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal scoring 4 goals en route to comfortable victories while Chelsea were a quintessential Conte side in the manner they saw off Southampton 2-0.
The biggest surprise was reserved for Manchester United who failed to get past Burnley despite having 37 attempts on goal and the Clarets have only Tom Heaton to thank for the result.
While there were many stand-out performances we shall take a look at the top 3 midfielders to have caught our eye over the weekend.
ILKAY GUNDOGAN
The best midfielder in the league as far as last weekend is concerned. The German playmaker had one of his best performance in a City shirt and in the process notched up 2 goals and an assist as well.
His movement and passing were spot on throughout the 90 minutes and his late runs into the box reminded us of Frank Lampard at his peak.
A fit and in-form goal scoring Gundogan will be an incredible boost for the Sky Blues and it would have given the player confidence to loosen the shackles and express himself higher up the pitch.
ALEXIS SANCHEZ
The Arsenal forward had gone off the boil in the last couple of matches and although he was contributing positively with his runs and movements which freed up space for the other attackers to operate in, his own attacking output had diminished. But against Sunderland he had the perfect opportunity to get his scoring boots on and it was exactly what he did.
Sanchez scored a well-taken brace and was unfortunate not to complete his hat-trick. In a 4-1 win, it was incidentally the player he has replaced as a striker- Giroud who scored the other two goals. Thus, it will be interesting in the coming weeks to see Wenger’s plans regarding the two.
EDEN HAZARD
The fleet-footed Chelsea attacker is slowly hitting his top form and once he does that Conte’s Chelsea will be hard to stop. They capped off a brilliant October with a 2-0 win over a tricky Southampton side and Hazard was instrumental in both the goals, scoring one and assisting the other.
Chelsea have slowly but steadily joined the procession at the top and their latest displays warrant a good look at their chances of challenging for the title.
