With the goals flowing freely in the latest game week, the defenders had a real torrid time throughout the league. Only 7 teams out of the 20 managed to keep a clean sheet with a couple of surprises along the way. With managers like Mourinho and Conte in the league, both of whom like to keep their backline compact on a priority basis before going on the attack, it wasn’t a surprise to see them keep a clean slate at the back.
While United were expected to comfortably keep Burnley at bay, the biggest surprise of the game week came in the form of the Clarets somehow managing to thwart the blockbuster United attack at the Old Trafford. Displays such as these certainly give a boost to the so-called small teams and Burnley have set an example twice now, first against Liverpool and now United.
With the action coming to an end with Stoke’s 3-1 win over Swansea, we take a brief look at the top 3 defenders to have left a mark on proceeding this weekend.
MICHAEL KEANE
The biggest shock of the weekend came in the form of Burnley’s clean sheet at the Old Trafford. Although Tom Heaton was adjudged the hero on the day, and rightly so, the young English defender- Michael Keane was no less impressive in front of him. He is an asset to Burnley and once again showed his potential in the face on an avalanche of United’s attack for 90 minutes. He made 3 interceptions, blocked 5 shots and incredibly made 13 clearances to play his part in this uplifting day for the Clarets.
