Rangers had quite an underwhelming start to their season. Following their return to the Premiership after four long years, expectations were very high from the fans and Mark Warburton’s side has let down so far. Let us take a look at the three stars and three duds of Rangers this season.
Stars
Andy Halliday
The 25-year-old has been in brilliant form this season at the heart of Rangers midfield. He has mostly played at the base of Rangers’ 3-man midfield, the role for which Joey Barton was signed in the summer. Halliday has done much better than Barton in defensive midfield. Well, the Scot is not as good a passer as Barton but his energy and tenacity make up for that. On top of his defensive abilities, Halliday has also scored five goals in all competitions this season.
Lee Wallace
Rangers skipper Lee Wallace has done pretty well this season doing justice to his armband. Apart from the Celtic game, Rangers have not been abject defensively in the Premiership. Wallace has done well defensively but he has offered his best while going forward. Wallace’s attacking forays give the team a whole other dimension in attack. He has scored once and assisted four times this season and deservedly makes this list.
Niko Kranjcar
The Croat going down with a season-ending injury a few weeks ago gave Rangers a massive blow. The former Spurs midfielder offered plenty of creativity to the Gers with his vision whenever he was on the pitch. 3 goals and 3 assists from 15 games do not speak enough of his creativity but he was being played much deeper by Warburton and still such a return is quite impressive.
Duds
Philippe Senderos
Rangers, after their promotion to the Premiership after four long years, brought in an experienced defender like Senderos to shore up their backline but the Swiss has let everyone down. He has played for clubs like Arsenal, AC Milan, Valencia, and Everton and boasts 57 caps for the Swiss national team which is the reason Rangers brought him to Ibrox. But his career looks pretty much finished after a woeful performance against Celtic. He is struggling to make the team sheet now.
Martyn Waghorn
Waghorn has scored eight goals in all competitions this season but out of that, seven came in the League Cup. The 26-year-old has not scored for the Gers in the Premiership since his strike against Hamilton Academical on the opening day and after last season’s blitz in the second division, he’s flattered to deceive.
Kenny Miller
The 36-year-old looks done at the top-level now. The former Scottish international forward has been struggling since the start of the season and has just scored 3 goals from 1034 minutes of first-team football. Waghorn missed a significant part of the season though injuries and Joe Garner just moved to Ibrox. Miller needed to do much better during that time but failed to do so.
